If you like cheese and wine (and frankly, who doesn’t??) then a visit to Fairview in Paarl is a must. They do a fabulous wine & cheese tasting, have a well-stocked deli and a lovely restaurant. What more can one ask for? Well, here’s the bonus: by buying Fairview’s products you also contribute to making the world a better place!

Fairview has been in the Back family for three generations, and current owner Charles Back has always put social accountability and community upliftment at the top of Fairview’s ethos. Over the years, Fairview has established numerous schools, social programmes and community centres in the area. Since September 2013 Fairview, and all of its 10 farms across Paarl, Darling and Stellenbosch, are Fairtrade certified. The process of becoming certified by Fairtrade, the best-known and most trusted international label of ethical labour and trading conditions, includes rigorous annual audits against social, economic and environmental standards. A percentage of the funds generated from the sale of Fairtrade wine will be put into various community development projects, benefitting as many as 450 people.

There is plenty to do at Fairview, so be sure to set aside a few hours for your visit. The Tasting Room offers a superb wine and cheese tasting, and the Deli offers a tantalizing range of cheese, chutneys, olives, olive oil, fresh bread and anything else you can think of for the perfect cheese board or picnic. Enjoy a delicious meal at The Goatshed, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant that serves many of the farm’s own produce including wine, cheese and homebaked bread. After all of this, the gardens invite you for a leisurely stroll to smell the lavender and watch the goats play in the Goat Tower.

Here’s a previous blog I wrote with a delicious recipe that pair great with Fairview’s Camembert: Jonas’ Pear Marmalade with Walnuts.
